MD96700 Will Not Boot

  • I'm a new user a this forum. I've been searching the forums for solutions to my problem, but unfortunately I don't speak German. I bought a Medion MD96700 PNA1500 while working in Frankfurt in 2006. I see that my problem seems a bit common from some of the other threads, but I didn't really see any solutions - at least none that I understood.

My unit was working fne until I removed the battery a couple of days ago to check the model and part numbers - not remembering the numbers could be found under the GPS antenna. The unit has not booted since reinstalling the battery. I have even performed a Hard Rest a few times a suggested in some of the other threads but to no avail. Here's the text of my tech support request sent to Medion yesterday:

    > Sonderauswahl: PNA1500
    > Seriennummer: US1G5A33815
    > MD Nummer: 96700
    > I am having a problem getting my Pocket PC to start. I had removed the battery to get the model numbers (not realizing the numbers could be found under the GPS antenna). When I replaced the battery, the unit indicates "Loading" and then changes to the blue "Mobile Navigationsystem" screen. However, it then powers off to a blank screen and will not start. I tried removing the battery again and the same thing happens after replacing the battery and also whenever pressing the power button. I have tried the "Reset" button and a "Hard Reset" and still the same sequence and not booting. The blue "Mobile Navigationsystem" screen shows R9.3.201.1026.1 in the upper left corner before the screen goes blank. Can you assist me in starting my unit?

I had a problem like this about 3 years ago, but the unit eventually rebooted and everything seemed fine. Is there a battery inside powering the bios or something that needs replacing? Any help would certainly be greatly appreciated while I'm waiting for Medion to reply. Happy New Year's greetings to all. Cheers, Ralph!

  • Well, some more info for those experiencing the same problem. I'm happy to report my device is working again. It turned out to be the microswitch activated by the battery cover. I had checked it yesterday using the stylus, but apparently had not pushed it correctly. Consequently, that's when I did the Hard Reset which it turns out wasn't necessary.

Good news, the MD96700 is working again. :)
Bad news, all my data was erased with the Hard Reset to include the Medion Navigator 5. ;(

All my maps are on the 2GB data card. Too bad I didn't have the actual program on the card.

So, I'm here in Germany on vacation and my original software is back home in the States. Does anyone know where I can download a copy of MN5 so I can use my GPS while I'm here in Germany?

  • Hi Ralph,
it would be helpfull to know where in Germany You are!

    Regards Sascha (from Stuttgart)

  • Hi Ralph,

so you can be lucky that your MEDION is working again.

Normally MN5 programm datas are stored on the memory card.
Only some (not urgently needed) programm links are installed at the system memory.

Pls try to run the programm directly from the memory card using file-explorer to navigate to the proper subdirectory and double-click the MobileNavigator.exe

If you can not find a copy of the programm on the memory card you should search to find certain download forums using google.

Further Navigon released a 30days trial version of the new MN7 (which is running great on the MD96700) www.navigon.de
You need to have an active internet connection every time you boot your trial-version, so do not turn off your programm for the next 30days...

Further more you should buy a second memory card if you whish to use the trial version. Your old 2GB has not enought space to keep both systems (mn5 & mn7)

  • Hi to Sascha & Hardy!

Just returned to Ehningen (south of Stuttgart) from Berlin where I didn't have an internet connection. Hotel wanted 17 Euro per day - too expensive! I don't have the MN5 software on my storage card and my original software is back home in US. No big issue now with getting the MN5 installed since I'm going back home on Sunday and can reinstall it once I get there.

    Some quick questions though:

    - I just successfully installed the Medion MD96700 update from Feb 2006. I had not done it before because I didn't want to do a Hard Reset. However, now that I did a Hard Reset when trying to get my MD96700 working again, I installed the update. My MD96700 is running Windows Mobile 5.0 for the OS. Since I now have a "clean" MD96700 after the Hard Reset, is is possible or even advisable to update it to Windows Mobile 6?

    - I thought the MD96700 would only recognize storage cards up to 2GB ans not read any SDHC cards. What's the largest card a MD96700 will read and recognize?

    - Are there any map updates available or even worth getting for Medion Navigator 5? I remember trying to use Navigon's Mobile Navigator 5 maps a few years ago and they wouldn't work. Guess the Medion MN5 is propriatary software.

    Thanks for the help!

    Cheers!
    Ralph

  • Hi Ralph,

WM 6 is not running. To use a SDHC card You´ll need a driver for SDHC.
Send me Your mail-adress and I´ll look what I can do for You.
    Have You ever visit Stuttgart?
If You are in Stuttgart before You leave, call me. (0170 3408200)

no way to upgrade to a win6 system! Stay with you system as it is perfect, if you have all possible upgrades.
Pls refer to my tutorial for beginners (link at buttom)

After installing a SHCD driver you can use up to 32GB SDHC (also mentioned in my tutorial)

There are no new maps for MN5 available, you should switch to MN7 (my tutorial again :) )
