but when comes 4.0 ???? ;) you remember, i´dont use normaly navigation with my Becker, it´s only fallback if i lose my pocketpc or my pc in the car not works :)

Till it happens, TomTom will have to do as all other functions of my Becker are operational, most importantly Bluetooth and voice commands.

    Ah wel..... ;)

  • btw: I ask tomorrow my special car dealer, maybe he has a CF card from an old or brocken-down Casade. Maybe its cheap or even free :)

ups sorry @ all, i think if you have a becker than you have the origin right to copy maps from one media to other

This statement would be correct if the medium (CF card / DVD / CD-Rom) is not equipped with a hard- or software protection (to disable the copy function) - btw this applies for all type of software.

In the past it was possible to copy the Navi CD-Rom (with the map data). To avoid this Becker decided to release updates on a CF card, which has a protection mechanism. Hence, officially you are not allowed to make a copy - even if you have an official licence. Anyway.

Let's hope that the new release will be made available soon. :)

  • Hallo thomasfrank72

Does this also apply to the maps supplied on SD (not on the 7945 of course) ? and can you alter/add data on a CF card like POI etc or do you still have to use the CD ?

I always use copies in both the 7820 and 7945 and keep the originals safe as the car enviroment is not the ideal place for a DATA cd, a scratch on a music cd is not a great loss whereas a data cd is renderd useless by it.

CDs (DVDs) are more durable being read-only devices where as CF/SD media is more prone to corruption - I have a few of these X( , either zapped possibly by static or magnetically, or ones that I forgot in a reader plugged into a PC that Windows decided to 'fix' on a reboot...

Wish Becker offer an option - neverthe less as you say, Let's hope that the new release will be made available soon

    Kind Regards

As far as I know it applies to the map data on CF card. Haven't heard yet that Becker also provides them on SD for fixed mounted navis (they sell also portable navis and the map data for those might be sold on SD - likely that they are protected also). Anyway.

You can add data to the original CF card (approx. 500MB), but be aware that POI's, for example, won't be recognised. POI's (e.g. SpeedTraps) need to be on CD and you will have to "upload" (put the disc in the CD-Rom) them to the Flash memory.

PS1: I fully understand your comments and concerns about using the original media (CD, DVD etc.) and I am sure that many people create and use a backup instead of the original media (various type of software is not protected against copies).

PS2: Once you've got your own Becker CF card make sure that you don't format the card (e.g. if you want to put music on the CF also) as you'll then also delete the special formatting that is used (among other things) to "protect" the media (the card won't be recognised by your navi anymore after restoring the map data). The only thing you can do then is to send it to your Becker dealer (in Germany you'll have to pay approx EUR 50,- for a data restore).

  • Thanks for the info Thomas, I sure will keep that cf card WELL clear of any PC :D and lets hope I have better luck with the new version of this software...

The whole reason for the upgrade was TMC issues, so hopefully v3/v4 should solve the problem - expensive cure if you ask me, but one that is quite important considering how conjested our roads are getting.

  • hi fwd :)

TMC works, like TMC works ;) the most of the time - TMC informations wrong or to old, I drive 100tsd km per year, and have 3 systems with different navi Systems. I analyze many hours on the road the function of the different systems, and what can I say: there is many potential for engeenering for the next 10 years :)

let me know, when 4.0 is on the market then I send you the CF 3.0, maybe we can meet us at heatrow too :)

In the moment there is a partnership between TOMTOM and vodafone, with new features over GPRS. maybe that works comfortable ;)

sorry, my english is terrible ;)
    bg !!!

  • Hallo marci

For professional use maybe TMC cannot be relied on because of late updates or inaccurate information, but for the private and occasional use, if working, can be of great help to unable you to "see-around-the-corner" and get routed accordingly.

GPRS is ok but might be a little too slow where as 3G is much faster but in the UK the coverage is not so good and it automatically drops down to 2G in low cover areas.

Nothing wrong with your English... it is 100% better than my German :D
