  • Be careful. The 3100 is like the 71xx or 51xx and this battery pack will not work with a standard usb a to mini-b cable without difficult modification of the USB mini-b end.

If the third party accessory company gives the same part number for motorola and the newer navigon units fore mains (AC) adapters, car adapters, or external battery packs, they are just guessing at computability based on 5 volts at 1 amp with usb mini-b. This is an INCORRECT guess.

The 3100 is the same as the 71xx or 51xx and this will put your device into data exchange - -synchronization model. It will NOT navigate

This is an issue because the navigon's seems to have the lowest battery life (autonomy) of any competing product. This makes walking tours useless.

I will post more details in a topic I began last week on power supply issues.

At this point I am certain the navigon 71xx, 51xx, 31xx AC and car chargers share same usb mini-b head wiring configurations as certain very new MIO devices. Mio 7xx series devices use the exact same car charger with the difference of a 180 degree usb mini vs a right angle 90 degree plug.

I am also certain blackberry, motorola, and standard usb mini-b pinouts will NOT work.

The UDID contained in the usb mini b head (and not in the body of the charger) must be replicated to charge and use device without triggering data mode. There are several types of mini-b: standard; pin 4 pin 5 short; pin 4 pin 5 >200 ohms; pin 2 pin 3 short, pin 2 at resistance and 4 and 5 shorted etc.

The best options are to find chargers with same exact configuration that are low cost and cut off mini-b head and splice it to usb a in order to use with universal usb chargers or battery packs.

  • Interesting issue, psaras

"The 3100 is the same as the 71xx or 51xx and this will put your device into data exchange - -synchronization model"

Did you try this, or is it just a guess too?

The 21x0 e.g. behaves this way too, but I am surprised concerning 31x0

But note that already older Mio Chargers e.g. the Atech ATPI 68TH0501 or the Wallcharger PSC05R-050 do provide necess. connection at PIN 4,and sev. others - so how. do you know this pack just has got an PIN 1,5 connection?

    I´m not doubting but curious.

  • Hallo psaras,

thank you for your detailed remarks. I`m looking forward to your examinations ;D

  • the 31xx, 51xx, and 71xx use the exact same auto and mains/wall chargers. They must have identical device mode detection pin connections. The 21xx uses a different charger, since tmc is integrated in the usb in the 21xx.

    1) I have tested normal usb mini b and it failed. 5v across pins 1 and 4 (standard mini-usb set up), with data pins 2 and 3 connected (standard usb charging/data cable) or disconnected (standard usb charging cable) both place the 71xx into data transfer only mode and precludes/forbids concurrent use of MN6.5.

    2) I have tested razr charger and it failed. 5v across pins 1 and 4; with data pin 2 shorted direct to pin 4; and 4 shorted to x via a 200ohm resistor (motorola razr standard) also results in data mode only displayed.
    http://pinouts.ru/CellularPhon…zrv3_charger_pinout.shtml

    3) I have not tried a 5 v across pins 1 and 4; with 4 shorted to 5 (x) via a 17-20 ohm resistance (nuvi's chargers)
    http://pinouts.ru/GPS/garmin_nuvi_power_pinout.shtml

(I have discovered caution should be used with gamin oem as the resistance across 4 and x is in the cradle.

phihongs "PSC05R-050 " is too short a model number. PSC05R-050 can come with no usb at all, eg a barrel connector. One needs the full model number to compare. Have you tried this in a 71xx or 51xx (the transonic 7000 is different and not applicable). If you have tried it in a 71xx, 31xx or 51xx and have the full model that will be helpful.

ATECH, ATPI-68HT0501 is also too short a descriptor as it comes in 68HT0501-NC1.0 ATECH and ATPI-68HT0501-B1.0. those differences are very likely usb mini b internal wiring. In fact one of the 68HT0501 seems to have barrel connection.

I think once we know this we can find the cheapest possible chargers to cannabilize to create short usb a to proper mini-b connectors for use with universal chargers and universal external batteries. the issue is more acute for users in the US as the official charger via navigon costs a fortune. but as the interest in external battery packs also exists in Europe as evidenced by this thread, a solution is needed for you guys as well.

  • Hm, I´m surprized Pinouts.ru does count em 123x4.
Maybe I´m wrong , but I do count 1,2,3,4,5 - so when I told you 21x0 is supplied by 1 and 5 (1=Vcc and 5 =Ground )we´re talking about a different thing. Furthermore they´re talking about 200k and not of 200ohm (which would have been my guess too)

And at the Nüvi they do claim 17,3K where the k stands for Kilo too..

And you´re right complete number is ATPI-68HT0501-NPC1.1 supplied with Mitac PNA since 2005.
Since this cable obviously has been responsible for bad FM TMC reception (distortion) some guys at Medion Forum did find out that this Hama type had 4-5 connection too (necessary for AC Cradle female)
http://www.t-mobile.de/shop/zu…0198-_6481-0---0,00.html? and has got same connection.

But I´d rather go for an fully 5 Pin wired Mini USB cable but haven´t been lucky yet. I´m not too much into connector soldering :D

    Good luck,

  • Danke Volker, da habe ich schon viele von aufgeschnitten, alles 4-Wire Adapter X(
Der Stecker hat stets 5 Pins aber 4 bzw. X ist immer unbelegt

    Btw.psaras: ATPI does use 200 ohms between 4 and 5 (x and 4 ;) )

  • dehlya,
Sorry about the K. rather than being exact on other unique mini-b's I was trying to show that there are quite a few different ones.

Can I just confirm you have tried this mio 269 etc charger with a 7100, 5100 or 3100?

yes the problem is that the x is not connected to any wire, otherwise a splice at the cable woudl be easy and robust. If it was a non mechanical, rarely moved connection I would be ok at opening mini-b and soldering, like this (http://www.bestparking.eu/miniusb.html) but if it is a plug to to be disconnected and connected a soldered (or traced) connection and reglued mini-b might fail or worse.

    Zitat

this cable seems to be standard usb a to mini-b and I think it would kick you into data transfer/sync mode.

What we need to do to enable trouble free use of external batteries (which would be very convenient for walking tours given the very low battery life of the 71xx), or universal usb charger, or hardwired vehicle 5v would be to determine a list of tested chargers that are easy to find and inexpensive, and from which users could harvest the mini-b end for splicing to a usb a.

  • good news. I borrowed a volt/ohm meter with very fine probes and am getting a pure short (connection) between pin x and 4 with no resistance, and no connections (dead "floating") for data pins 2 and 3 on both the OEM navigon provided automobile and mains chargers.

Although this means the most common mini-b mod -- http://www.bestparking.eu/miniusb.html -- will work, the good news is that here in the states, and probably in Europe, there are cheap razr chargers ($1) with "snap-on" usb mini-b heads that can be split open and easily and robustly soldered. Razr v3 chargers have resistors already soldered between x and 4 so one can just get a thin piece of wire and jump the resistors with solder and epoxy down the head. (this means one does not have to solder the pin itself).

I will do this and post some pictures next weekend.

also helpful will be if we could maintain a list of easily obtainable, inexpensive and confirmed existing x-4 shorted mini-b power supplies for other devices.

  • one refinement. the actual sleeve appears shorted to 4 and x as well.

  • dehlya,

On the second link I do know the difference between mini a, mini b, mini a/b and mini b type 2 and I would not have opened the thread if the nuvi charger worked.

At least my 660 car charger does not work with a 7100.

As far as I can tell navigon is actually using the mini-b sleeve as a 6th contact point.

  • You ve got me wrong - I did talk about the picture with PIN 4 and 5 shorted, not about the Nüvi charger with 17k between PIN 4 and 5. the discussion has been relating to your topic anyways. Same issue, when the medion users found out they were not able to charge Active Cradle with standard USB devices .
Btw., I wonder that the Atech type with 200 ohms between 4 and 5 did not work with your device. Won´t get my hands on our 7110 til dec., would have tried myself.
