Many problems with VDO 5500

  • I have bought in june 2005 a 5500 +TM and have it installed on a Renault Espace 4 by a Renault Garage.

    System references :
    PC5510/00
    0111
    0957
    0921
    17/04
    Navteq 2005/06.

Since the beginning, the system has not worked correctly; the problems met are the following :
    - delocalisation (up to 5O km) thus the GPS reception is very good (4-5 satellites)
    - sometimes after good GPS reception (4-5), GPS reception turns without any reason to 0 and remain so from several minutes to several days.
The 5500 unit and the GPS receiver have already been replaced by my garage without any change.
Did somebody have the same problem and do you have any solution ?

    Thanks for your help

  • Hello and wellcome,

what kind of GPS-Antenna is in your car and where is it? I think the reason of your problems are the metallised windows in your car. The GPS-Antenna does'nt work correctely under such windows. On your case i would take an antenna on the roof of the car.

  • I am using the inside antenna that is delivered with the 5500. It is positionned in the special area on the windshield.
Sometimes, the GPS reception is very good (6-7) and suddenly it falls to 0 and remains to 0 or 1.

But sometimes, a delocalisation occurs even if the GPS reception is green (4 or 5).

  • Try to set the antenna on the roof of the car. I'm sure it will be better.

  • Hello Joga

As the member before mentioned, try to relocate the antenna. I have placed my under the roof. Between the metal and inner sealing, about 15 cm. from the edge of the roof. And remember to remove the big metal plate wich is placed on the gps antenna. It is fastend with I think 2 screws. This I have done on my own car and on a friends car and there is no problems at all. Maybe th problem is in your software. I have had some problems with the newest realese MO 5597, so I went back to the old MO 5595 and there is no problems now. Se more about this software problem in the forum.

  • Thank you for your advices.
I contacted this morning my garage to make the modification.
I have already a pre-installed antenna (GSM/GPS) on my roof but the cabling is not complete; my garage will tell me if the modification is possible.

  • The problem may be an electromagnetical interference with your pre-installed GPS antenna and the navigation systems'.

  • What a joke :D No other reactions to this??

  • I have tested the 5500 with the antenna provided put outside on the roof; it works now perfectly.
    Hope, it will last.
The further step is to integrate the solution; my garage is looking for the best solution.

In your earlier posting you indicated that a GSM/GPS antenne already is fitted on the roof of your car. I highly recommend using this indeed, it works perfectly as I know by my own experience with my Citroën Xantia.
So just buy the necessary cabling and enjoy it :)

  • That would be best JWW.
I wait for the garage pricing ... hope it will be good

  • What do you mean by what a joke?
I have the antenna under the roof and it works perfectly. I have never ever had any problems with satelite reciving. It is easy to mount and it is hidden away.

It implicates that your antenne does not "see" the satellites above you directly but only receives satellite signals via reflections inside your car.
Apparently your navigation system wordks properly by the mapmatching through speedpulse and gyro, but not because your GPS signals are always present.

  • I dont know what happens, but the signal from the satelites are normaly 4-5, sometimes up to 7. I have only experienced a min. of 1-2 satelites when the weather is werry cloudly and heawy rain.
And a friend of mine which has a Xsara Picasso has also his antenna under the roof and it also works and he has not connected the speed impulse. But then he has problems when he enters tunnels etc. maybe you should try it so you can se that it works.

  • I will definitely not install and test it in your way, as I have a perfectly working system under ALL circumstances.

Your "solution" really is inferior, and in full contradiction to what all manufacturers write in their instructions. Again, the GPS signals only partially do reach your antenna, via reflections in your interior at various places.

You better install your GPS-antenna in a normal place, enabling it taking advantage of its properties in full.
