I'd like to choose my system taking in consideration of the masp quality. I know the known brands are Navteq, Teleatlas, Viewmaps.

Teleatlas and Navteq are the suppliers of the raw data (digitalized roads). They supply these raw data to their customers, the system manufactuers like Blaupunkt, VDO Dayton, Clarion, Pioneer, Kenwood, Panasonic and Alpine, Visteon and others. Each of these system manufactuers have their own operating system that works with these raw data. Their is no standardisation in this market. Some of the system manufactuers supply their systems to the car OEM. That might even vary from car model to car model.
It is suggested that you read all postings in this forum in regard to Ford. There has been a lot of anger with the Ford DVD-System.
The Ford specialist in this forum can only help you with precise answers if they learn from you more details, such as car model, model year, and navigation-system ordered from Ford etc.
But basically, it normally is so as already explained, that you are stuck with the system that you received with your Ford car. The map CD or DVD for that system usually is only supplied by Ford dealers. There is no choice for you betwen the suppliers of raw data for that specific system.

In Europe, there is one company VDO Dayton, which supplies navigation systems for the after market and also to the car OEM.
They have a unique system. called C-IQ. That allows the user to choose the map CD or DVD between Teleatlas and Navteq.
To my knowledge such a VDO Dayton system is not supplied to Ford, at not least for the moment.
If you do have a Ford car without a factory-installed navigation system, then you could consider such a retrofit system by VDO with the C-IQ software.
Such systems are either radio-navigation-systems or monitor-stand-alone systems and they are very fast und powerful navigation systems.

Hope this clarifies somewhat the complex car navigation market for CD and DVD Systems.
    Good luck!

  • Very helpful post !! Thanks

I have the Ford Travelpilot RNS4 system.

  • Hi,

to my knowledge that is a Blaupunkt system. It is a CD system. That means for each major country one CD, and also one with the Major Roads of Europe (MRE). All CDs are based on Teleatlas raw data.
Blaupunkt is a subsidiary of the Robert Bosch Company, so is Teleatlas. That means, you can buy the CDs for your system directly from Teleatlas via the internet. Make sure you you specify your navigation system because of the many different operating systems within the Blaupunkt navigation systems.

What do you think about the quality of my navy system and maps accuracy?

PS: very good english you talk !

  • Hi,

Blaupunkt has always been known for excellent and precise navigation instructions.
You need to find out in the Teleatlas catalogue in the internet if you can obtain for your system a 2004 CD. That gives you some assurance for depth in digitalisation.
In the past, Blaupunkt made available via Teleatlas CDs also for the older systems like yours. Newer Blaupunkt-systems with the index DX use a more effecient compression method to get more data on one CD.
You cannot use those DX-CDs in your system.
In most MediaMarkt or Saturn stores you will find Blaupunkt systems on display if you need to compare DX-systems with your system.
If you need to talk to a CAR-HI-FI dealer, look under www.carakustik.de
    Good luck again

  • I think the Ford Blaupunkt is DX compatible as it is a RNS149 with a customized case.
You can see at the http://www.teleatlas.com , here my Ford system is compatible with the new Italy 2004-2005 DX maps.

Are you sure it isn't DX compatible?

  • Hi,
if you go to www.teleatlas.com then Navshop.com then Blaupunkt and you will find the TravelPilot RNS149.
As I mentioned already, Blaupunkt is very good in providing latest map CDs also for systems that are not in their sales catalogue anymore since they are not produced anymore since years.
If it would be a DX-System it would be clearly marked as such.
To my knowledge Blaupunkt has 3 CD Systems
    the older NON-DX-system
    the DX-System
    the new E1/E2 system.

The CDs for theses systems are not interchangable.

Blaupunkt has a hotline in Germany
